Ah back to the serious stuff now. FLIP FLAPPING!

That was beautiful, especially the character relationship bonding again between Cocona and Papika. I also thought the episode did quite a nice job at expressing the more thrilling elements of storytelling. From the creepy laughs, weird faces, eerie music, and darker comedy, it had the horror-ish feel. Pretty entertaining stuff.

"Greetings". Pure Illusion is no joke. I really like how creative this show can get with that.

Great horror atmosphere this week. Too bad Halloween just ended. XD

Nice job getting the stone girls, and sending Yayaka packing. But this fight's far from over.

Best episode yet, Yayaka's really interesting so far, plus she's cute. I liked the use of horror here, sometimes being funny, sometimes legit scary and sometimes both.

I really enjoy waking up on Thursday morning to watch this before work. Still loving it and am starting to really like Yayaka's character. They're still just teasing us with glimpses at a "bigger picture", but I'm just really enjoying the different tone and themes of each episode.

Episode 5

Holy Queer Sexual Innuendo Batman. At this point the narrative is not even pretending to be blind to what is going on. It is actively urging for Cocona to find her identity and accept it.

The LGBT imagery was everywhere - the lily pattern knitting? The finger sucking? The lilies in the vase? Even the robot literally having two female gender symbols intermingled like marriage rings as reaction to Cocona and Papika's reactions?

Its everywhere. The show continues to be filled with symbolism regarding sexual identity.

And this is such a fitting episode too. It makes sense that Cocona would be haunted by what was said to her about her identity and that they would come to the layer of pure illusion that represents her fears. Pure Illusion more and more seems like versions of reality based on the ones perceiving it(hence Jakob Von Uexkull reference). Her school turns into all girls school full of faceless same "proper" individuals dreaming about the impossible and living by the order set for them.

Lack of identity, disappearing via conformity, its all of the things Cocona was shown feeling - the show started with her being distressed at Papika pulling her out of the crowd and making her stand out from being proper. A school filled of Coconas who have nothing of their own, no "ego", just vague dream of sexual identity that could be but is out of their reach.

Just like Cocona they are stuck in a loop repeating same everydays, dreaming same dreams and being unable to escape that. So it is fitting that it is Cocona and Papika who end up breaking the loop(Alongside Yayaka which also fits as she was shown attracted to Cocona before and obviously has doubts of who she is, fitting the pattern.).

Damn, this was creepy as hell. Not surprising, considering the director also worked on Dennou Coil, probably the only other anime that manged to scare me.

And those gokigenyou-ing qrE3TInqs girls seemed like a weird and creepy parody of MariMite.

Ohh its the creepy setting episode as the ED song suggested. And they are stuck in a time loop. I like how the finger licking intensified as the loop proceeded. The yuri might have eventually happened if the loop lasted forever as it was the kind which made you sexually frustrated.

While not very scary, it was still amazing. There was only one scene which startled me, the one where the mob girls suddenly came near the girls when they were trying to find the door the first time.

I am starting to think that Yayaka's organization is the 'good' one while the one Cocona and Papika are working for is the bad one.

Ok I have felt this way about this anime for a long time, but I feel like this episode is the right one to express that feeling
This anime is BOTH CUTE AND CREEPY
"I lost all of what you could call feelings of love. They weren't sealed, so they can't be released. They weren't broken, so they can't be fixed. That which is lost, cannot be recovered." Shiba Tatsuya
"There are no regrets. If one can be proud of one's life, one should not wish for another chance." Saber
"No matter what happens, no matter how crazy things get, I'll always try to restore balance." Korra

There was no yuri in the loop though. The setting was locked in a constant timeloop of needing those relationships but resetting before it is even possible.

So it is more like "class s usage to deny progression of relationships in stories is evil".

5 episodes in, and I love this show now. Even though the first episode was meh the show just really warmed up. The bizzaro faceless students with their distorted voices was creepy and everything in this horror themed episode just was fun and spooky at the same time.

The now strained friendship between Cocona and Yayaka is going to be interesting to see how they play it out now. Excited and I just can't wait for more.

A really amazing episode, I think it was the best of this show so far along with episode three. Pure Illusion is a nice allegory for one's inner self and the surrealistic presentation of it always manages to surprise me.
I'm just wondering which emotion or frame of mind will be the next theme when it has been airing for only five episodes and we have already got doubt, instinctual behaviour, self-sacrifice, sexuality, self-actualisation, and fear among others as topics.

Well, after some pretty and colorful episodes, they jumped straight into the world of creepy because this was just all kinds of creepy. Those faces.... yikes.

Papika and Cocona enter this world and start getting influenced by it. They get enrolled in that all creepy girls school and start indulging in their activities. But the world is stuck in a loop and things are reset at midnight. Yayaka tells Cocona about the reality of things. Both girls were losing themselves to this world and started to forget why they came here. Cocona knocks Papika out of it and they go get the fragment/amorphous.

We learn one thing here, the world of pure illusion effects the newcomers entering it. The weird ass rabbit hole and the desert land also effected them. Yayaka questions Cocona's reasons for collecting the fragments/amorphous and she replies that she's doing it because Paprika needed her and because it's kinda fun; shallow reasons compared to Yayaka and her group's (absurd and stupid idea of) world domination.

I think the focus here is Cocona and everything is telling us about her. In the beginning we learn that Cocona hasn't decided on her high school future. She doesn't have think much for herself and is kinda empty with no purpose—which is what that loli two episodes back said, what her dreams kinda suggest, what this episode showed (those creepy girls are nobodies like her), and most of all, what her reason for collecting the fragments suggests.

We still have a lot to learn about the stuff here. The weird scientist said that Yayaka and the twins were "built." Does this suggest that Papika and/or Cocona are similarly creations for this purpose? Papika may be for obvious reasons, and Cocona because her granny is awfully lenient, letting her go to a friend's house to stay without asking any question at all and not scolding her or even asking her anything when she comes back late. Could be that she's just there for Cocona to believe that she has someone at least.

The interesting thing about this show is the world building. The characters are mysterious but they aren't the good intriguing kind of mysterious with how they've shown things so far. I'm not getting a lot of the symbolism here. Like, I know that there are lesbians here but I don't know if there was any hidden theme here other than the stuff about this Cocona.

honestly those qrE3TInqs still got me like

Something that i noticed that gave me chills when papika walks by:

when cocona walks by:

it was very interesting.
but otherwise.. can i just say that i'm obsessed with yayaka's hair
and the mini fight between yaya and papi
while papika knows how to pack a punch, meanwhile yayaka is throwing kicks left and right

but otherwise, i'm really curious about this episode and really raises some questions like:
1. What does it mean that Yayaka and the twins' brains are different?
Are they not human then? Is Papika even human in that case? What makes Papika and Cocona's brains alike? Or different?
2. How does Pure Illusion work?

3. At the end, I wonder if Yayaka and the twins are the "bad guys".
I'm waiting for more episodes so that can clear up what the Amorpheus really is. Hmm..
Everything is really confusing right now but nonetheless the animations are fun and engaging.
I wish there was more fight scenes but maybe that will save for next ep?

What a creepy and funny ep xD
I really liked how it showed how close Papika and Cocona have been getting, and I actually really enjoyed their interactions with Yayaka this ep
Really trippy and creepy ambience that was sometimes just straight up funny and other times was extremely disturbing
Oh the pain of waiting a week for more Flip Flapping!

That's an interesting and very plausible basis for a theory to me, it does seem like Cocona is sort of allowing Papika to do something, and I'm interested in hearing how all of Papika's former partners died

We spooky now, can't say I was expecting that kind of atmosphere from this show but by now I've learned to expect nothing and everything from this show at the same time.

I like the concept of a world being stuck in a loop, and when that loop is broken all of the time passed just surges in at an instant causing everything to collapse.

There have been so much suggestive stuff in this series centered around Papika and Cocona... This episode isn't even subtle about it anymore. ...and god I've got no complaints. I love this pair together.

Anyone else find themselves listening to the ending every time it comes up at the end? I swear, this is the first anime in a while that actually got me sitting through the credits watching the weird animations and music.
